MBWIB ANNOUNCES NEW VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

MBWIB is so proud to announce the launch of our volunteer program starting July 1st, 2010. With all the hard work, dedication, and determination it takes to run a committee like the Manhattan Beach Women in Business Committee, Bibi Goldstein and I saw what a wonderful opportunity this was to get people involved in some of the aspects that make this committee successful. Let's face it, without the hundreds of volunteers who put in thousands of hours to make this committee what it today, I would not have the platform in which to write this post, nor the knowledge of those who came before me, to grow this organization and take it to the next level.

Our vision is to take the very reason why you joined the best chamber in the South Bay, whether it’s to network, expand your business, or to grow as an individual, and give you a platform that allows you to do so, all the while maintaining your comfort level and capitalizing on your strengths. If you take a look at the committee members tab on this website, it gives you an idea of what the necessary positions are within this organization. From procuring sponsorships for the Women in Business conference in April, asking local businesses for goodie bag items, helping out on the online and silent auction team, helping with graphic design projects, keeping the social media up to date, or simply helping at the registration table during our monthly mixers, we want you to get involved. It's up to you what level of involvement or time commitment you are able to give. For every hour of service you provide, we award you with a percentage off your entrance into the next exciting mixer, and cumulatively a percentage off your ticket price to the hottest conference in town!! During our monthly newsletters we will feature a "Volunteer of the Month," which will feature your biography and an excerpt of your business.

If this is something you are interested in participating in, there is a volunteer application link on the site. Tell us a little about yourself, that we can expect from you and what you expect to get back from us. It's that simple. After you fill out the volunteer application, our board of directors will process it, and Jessica Perahia, our Volunteer Program Chair, will contact you to get the process started. You can email us any questions to volunteers@mbwib.com. Our goal is to help you maximize your chamber membership and grow your business. We hope you will join us!

Thankfully yours,

Sarah Perahia & Bibi Goldstein

Thank you Karen Karlson and MBWIB Members

Thank you for joining MBWIB for a lovely evening with  Stylist, Karen Karlsen. We learned how to express our moods using wardrobe choices with accessories, dress for work or a job interview, dress our body types, manage trends, and how to budget our purchases.  With great runway style, Portia Cohen modeled the looks as put together by the style teams. Karen was great fun, and very helpful. She stayed late answering all our fashion questions.

We loved the accessorized cupcakes,  courtesy of Cupcakes Couture and enjoyed the wine and cheese on the deck at Shade. A great time was had by all! Check out this short video clip (resolution not great due to the lighting -- but you'll get the idea!)

Karen has offered all MBWIB meeting attendees ONE HOUR of personal shopping. Please contact Karen to set up your appointment and you will be on your way to a perfect wardrobe! Email Karen Karlsen

Debra Lauzon shares her legal mind with MBWIB Members

With over 40 in the audience, Atty Debra Lauzon provided us with the legal business information that we need, but often don't get until it's too late! In an intimate forum, with a delicious lunch MBWIB Members were able to ask questions and engage in a thoughtful discussion about labor law, including: policy, training, salary payment guidelines, employment status designation (employee or independent contractor), hiring practices, and identifying harassment. Debra's humor and straight-forward delivery made the content both understandable and entertaining.

As a special treat, one of our new members in attendance was Jessica Farias, a 2004 Scholarship Award recipient. Jessica graduated from college and is now working as an HR Executive at AdvantageSCI. Jessica is now one of our volunteers so that she can grow with the group while giving back to others. It was truly gratifying to meet her and see the full circle of MBWIB's work and mission come through. I know we'll be seeing a lot more of Jessica and we wish her great success!

I would like to thank Mary Claire Orenic, our General Meetings Chair, for planning and managing this event. Also -- thank you to MBWIB Members for coming and contributing their thoughts and experience to the discussion, and to McCormick & Schmick for a delicious lunch with great service.

For more information about labor law that pertains to you and/or your business, you can contact Debra at:

2010 Heart and Soul Award Recipient

Manhattan Beach resident, business owner, philanthropist, wife and mother, Terry Gilman has devoted herself to giving the underprivileged a voice, sharing a love of literature, and building community in the Los Angeles area. These are just a few of the reasons MBWIB has chosen Terry as our 2010 Heart and Soul Award recipient.

Terry holds an MBA from DePaul University in Chicago, and has worked for Johnson & Johnson, traveled extensively through Europe, raised two children, and opened a bookstore in San Diego. "I need a lot of stimulation in my life, so in 1993, with 2 partners, we created Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore, a genre bookstore featuring books on martians, murder, magic and mayhem."

In 2001 Terry and her family moved to Manhattan Beach, where she dedicated her (considerable) energy to the community, Manhattan Beach Education Foundation, and served on the Board of her synagogue. Terry launched "Ladies, Lunch, and Literacy," a unique event which introduces first time authors with proceeds benefiting a variety of literacy organizations. In 2009, their first beneficiary, WriteGirl honored Terry with the Friend of WriteGirl Award. That same year Terry joined EveryChild Foundation, which donates a $1,000,000 grant to child-related causes each year.

Terry's contributions are sizable, but always measurable. They don't make headlines, but they make a difference. Terry has identified the things important to her and  brings these goals together with a creative spirit that touches the lives of many. We are thankful to have Terry as part of our community, and we are honored to that she is our 2010 Heart and Soul Award recipient.

Social Media Demystified. Real Marketing. Real Revenue

MBWIB thanks speakers LuAnn Roberto  and Gregg Towsley for a wonderful event!

With over 100 in the audience, the MBWIB Seminar was a great success. Thank you to the Belamar Hotel for a lovely breakfast with great service.

Our speakers provided a soup-to-nuts program for implementing social media into our business marketing practices. We learned about the ins and outs of Facebook, how and when to Tweet, the basics of the Blog, and how to plan, measure, and track our efforts. Even the most social-media-savvy of the audience learned something of value. We also enjoyed the large block of time dedicated to Q & A.

Slides presented at the event are now available for download.

One-2-One Mentoring Program

Successful entrepreneurs from the South Bay are now accessible to Manhattan Beach Women in Business Members through One-2-One. This unique program offers members the chance to connect with some of the top entrepreneurs in our community. You can read about our featured mentors online, and choose the mentor that best inspires and compliments your business needs and aspirations. This is a special opportunity for women entrepreneurs to learn to manage risk, to receive feedback, to open doors and develop their capabilities and skills within a framework of support. The voluntary sharing of knowledge, experiences, challenges, and successes are the keys to a successful one-to-one mentoring relationship.

Thank you Mayor Cohen and MBWIB Members

On Wednesday 9/23 we held our first meeting this Fall, a sold-out lunch event with the very engaging Manhattan Beach Mayor, Portia Cohen, as the speaker. Great information, great networking and a delicious lunch at Twelve+Highland. We learned about how Business Matters in the City and to the City of Manhattan Beach. Mayor Cohen's presentation was fact-filled and interesting. To download her slides, please click on "Cohen Wib Slides" below. To see the opening part of Mayor Cohen's talk, and meet some of our members, see the video below.
