Emily C. Williams, Leadership Development
Communicating in a Multi-Cultural / Generational Environment
A native of Southern California, Emily C. Williams works for the City of Los Angeles in a unique dual capacity. As a Senior Policy Advisor with the Human Relations Commission, she guides and assists city departments in their delivery of human relations training to employees and community members. Since 2005, she has served as the Los Angeles Fire Departments first Human Relations Training Manager, overseeing the design, delivery and evaluation of non-tactical training, including such topics as leadership, diversity, ethics, communication, and conflict management. Prior to these positions, Emily coordinated public safety and human relations programs for neighborhoods, schools, public housing developments, and formerly incarcerated persons.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) named her Instructor of the Quarter in Winter 2002. She was the 2003 recipient of the Los Angeles County Inter-Agency Gang Task Force award for her role in collaborative peacekeeping efforts to reduce gang violence and hate crimes in the Harbor and South Bay areas. In 2005, UCLAs Department of Public Policy awarded her the distinction of Alumnus of the Year. She is also the 2008 recipient of YWCA of the Harbor Areas Racial Justice Award.
Emily is a graduate of UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree. She also possesses an Advanced Certificate in Human Resource Management, earned through the CSUDH College of Extended and International Education. She is a board member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Manhattan Beach branch and a founding board member of A Better Los Angeles (ABLA).
